On July 09, 2025, a group of citizens, who requested that their personal information remain confidential, filed a submission to the Secretariat for Environmental Matters of the Free Trade Agreement between the Dominican Republic, Central America, and the United States of America – CAFTA-DR (SEM), in which they assert that the Republic of Guatemala is allegedly failing to effectively enforce its environmental legislation.
In the submission identified as CAALA/25/001 Coastal erosion and solid waste Livingston – GT, the submitters allege coastal erosion caused by sand extraction, deforestation, and possible pollution due to the discharge of solid and liquid waste on beaches located in the municipality of Livingston, Izabal.
